Sunniside Conservation Area - Have Your Say!

Sunderland residents and business people who have an interest in the heritage-led regeneration of the Sunniside area, will have an opportunity to have their say in consultations and exhibitions to be organised this Spring by Sunderland City Council.

The events will focus on a draft Character Appraisal and Management Strategy (CAMS) currently being prepared for the Central Sunderland (Sunniside) Conservation Area.

People who have information on the history of the area, or who have a view on how the conservation area is managed, will also be welcome to contribute and help develop the report.

Cllr James Blackburn, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Transportation says: “This will be a significant opportunity for people to contribute opinions, in a process designed to further ensure the revival and success of an area of the city centre, which has such an important role in making Sunderland an enjoyable place to live, work and visit.”

CAMS documents are designed to assist the City Council in determining planning applications, and also to provide reference information for all those with an interest in conservation areas. They also help to raise awareness and appreciation of an area’s special architectural or historic characteristics.

Following advice from English Heritage, the Character Appraisal will reinforce and appraise the characteristics and features that give a conservation area its special interest. The Management Strategy then addresses in detail the issues raised in the Character Appraisal and establishes management objectives to secure the future preservation and enhancement of the conservation area.

Following public consultation the completed CAMS document will be submitted to the Council Cabinet for adoption as planning guidance.

Currently adopted CAMS documents for some of the city’s other conservation areas can be viewed on www.sunderland.gov.uk/characterappraisals
