New Gardens are a Big Draw
People involved in an art project marking the creation of £2m gardens in Sunniside were invited to see a final exhibition of all the work produced.
A special display of drawings inspired by the regeneration of the historic city quarter was exhibited by Sunderland art group ASSIGN (Art Sunderland Support Initiative Group Network).
During October the group invited residents and visitors to contribute towards their Gardening and Drawing Art Project, which was held as part of the national Big Draw campaign.
Supported by Sunniside Partnership and Social Enterprise Sunderland, the project encouraged budding artists to respond creatively to the new gardens, which opened in the heart of Sunniside earlier this year.
Dozens of visitors, including groups of schoolchildren and artists, got involved and their work was put on display in ASSIGN’s studio in Frederick Street, Sunniside last week.
Bill Harris, of ASSIGN, said: “We were delighted by the response to our Big Draw project. Everyone really enjoyed taking part and it was encouraging to see so many people of all ages take an interest in what we are doing and also what exciting work is happening in Sunniside.”
